{"id":4580,"date":"2019-07-26T20:50:07","date_gmt":"2019-07-27T00:50:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.apls.ca\/?p=4580"},"modified":"2019-08-05T20:56:12","modified_gmt":"2019-08-06T00:56:12","slug":"graphite-mine-near-duhamel-que-has-locals-worried","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.apls.ca\/en\/archives\/4580","title":{"rendered":"Graphite Mine near Duhamel, Que., has Locals Worried"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.apls.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Screen-Shot-2019-08-05-at-8.49.20-PM.png\" width=\"293\" height=\"194\" \/>With its scenic lakes, beaches and forests, the Petite-Nation area of Quebec's Outaouais region is a paradise for lovers of the great outdoors.<\/p>\n<p>But residents now worry a graphite mine project near the towns of Duhamel and Lac-des-Plages, about 125 kilometres northeast of Ottawa, could affect their quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>\"The development of the region\u00a0here\u00a0is based on leisure, recreation and ecotourism,\" said\u00a0<strong>Louis St-Hilaire<\/strong>, a spokesperson for the <strong><em>Regroupement de protection des lacs de la Petite-Nation<\/em><\/strong>, a coalition of seven local homeowners' associations.<\/p>\n<p>\"<strong>The mining industry and the outdoor industry aren't really compatible<\/strong>,\" he said in a French-language interview with Radio-Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Surrey, B.C., company Lomiko Metals recently completed exploratory diamond drilling in a search for graphite, a mineral used by the electric vehicle industry, among others.<\/p>\n<p>But St-Hilaire worries about the environmental consequences, as well as the impact on local traffic.
